When a new kitten comes into your home it is a wonderful time, but it can be an anxious one too.

A kitten must be kept safe and comfortable so planning and patience by all in the household. However, the kitten will reward you greatly with love as he grows into a confident, affectionate new family member.

catsEvery pet owner wants to properly care for their pet. The small things you do for your cat will be repaid by much love and affection from them.  So provide good ongoing care for your kitten.  Dr. Jo,, has studied cat behavior and care and is a leading authority with cats.

Make grooming a part of your day-to-day routine.  Although cats naturally groom themselves, they also need a little help from you.

It’s important to also care for their emotional well-being.  Separation anxiety is a verycats  common behavior issue with kittens.  It can be frightening for a small kitten to be left alone.   There are some simple things to help your kitten adjust to sources of stress.  Moving into a new house impacts their health and social confidence.  Your extra physical interaction during this first few days replaces Mother Cat in kitten’s focus.

Medical problems are made worse by psychological stress. [For instance], inflammation of the bladder wall is linked to stress hormones in the blood.  One solution is to examine the cat’s social lifestyle.

A Cats Fur Coat.

Healthy skin and coat begin with good nutrition.  Cats care for their fur coat often. They are proud of how they look and want to be clean.  Their daily personal hygiene is done with the rough tongue.   A cat’s tongue is a wash cloth and a brush by design.  Cats use their tongue to remove loose hair and dust. However, it is okay to lend your feline friend periodic help.  Behavior they show toward us is derived from the mother-kitten relationship. The kitten learns to raise its tail, rub on its mother, and knead and purr. Grooming is what mothers do back to kittens.

FURminator deShedding Tool for Cats cats
Pets will always shed, and as long as they live indoors, you, the pet parent will always need a way to reduce pet hair.  The deShedding tool may be used on most long- and short-haired pets, including dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, ferrets and other small pets. The edge is designed to make grooming pets faster and easier.

Brushing your cat.

Begin grooming at the front of your cat, lifting small sections of hair with the brush and brushing forward, toward the cat’s head.  Stroke slowly taking small strokes toward the cat’s head working all parts of the fur. Then brush the entire fur coat back in the direction it naturally lays.  It is best to brush fur while dry.  However, slight spritzing of the coat of brush can be beneficial.

Brushing Short Haired cats is only needed three times a week when their coat is changing, usually springtime and autumn.  Other times, they take personal care of their fur.  However, some cats love occasional gentle grooming.  Now then, Long Haired types have to be brushed daily preventing coat from matting.  Parasites can nest in matted fur.

Brushing removes a lot of hair that would fall on your furniture and carpets or be ingested by your cat to become a hairball.

In caring for your cat’s coat, cut away matted knotting with scissors. Very thick coats on Short Haired types benefit with regular fur stroking using a brush.  While doing regular grooming check the general health of your cat.  The coat should be glossy, clean with no bald patches.  Dandruff, encrusted or inflamed areas on the skin indicate possible parasite infestation or eczema.  Contact a vet for a remedy.

Is your cat a flirt?

They like being a pet and knowing they have their owners’ attention.

If your cat does any of the following, they may be flirting with you.  To understand and relate better with your cat Dr. Jo (  has great guidance in “Living With Cats”.  She has a PHD. in animal behavior and has great insight in dealing with your pet’s needs.

  • Rub up against you.
  • Roll over in front of you.
  • Talk to you with little ‘chirrupie’ meows.
  • Gaze into your eyes.

The Rub

Here’s why they do these behaviors.
Cats rub to transfer their scent to you. Cats have scent glands around their head, at the base of their tail and on their paws. These scent glands are used to mark their territory and you are an extension of that territory.  Their scent makes them feel more comfortable in their world.

The Roll

It is difficult to ignore your cat falling to the floor and writhing around in front of you.  If you don’t trip over your cat, then you will likely bent down to interact and give your cat a pat or a belly rub.  He wants your affection so scratch his fur with your fingertips.  That will get his “motor” running.

The Chatterbox

Some cats are vocal, with Siamese and Oriental breeds particularly prone to loving the sound of their own voices.  You may really enjoy this interaction.  It happens when your cat is contented.

One unique sound cats.  The solicitation purr or meow.  It is a combination of a meow and purr, with a chirp sound.  Cats learn to use this vocalization when they want your attention.  They are interacting with you.

The Gaze

Does your cat gaze into your eyes?  Friendly cats enjoy a soulful look at us.  Try gazing back and every so often give a slow blink or wink. This is the way you can flirt back with your cat.

Other ways of Loving Us

Cats show their love for us by interacting with us,  Kneading with paws, Meowing and Purring is obvious. Some behavior that shows vulnerability is seen when a cat rolls on his back exposing his throat and belly in complete trusting, and when your cat sleeps on or next to you is a display of confidence and peacefulness in the relationship.

Some behavior traits less understood by us involve the basic nature of the hunter.  When your cat brings you gifts, body parts of a rodent caught during night hunt, maybe a toy, he is sharing his world. The behavior least understood by humans is the marking traits exhibited by spraying his scent.  That’s his territory and you are part of it so he is connecting to those surroundings that are home.

Naturally nocturnal

catsUnderstand why cats are active at night.  Cats are naturally nocturnal animals, hunting at dawn and dusk, when small mammals are active.  Cats are well adapted for night time with great vision for dim light.  Wide pupils allow in as much light as possible. Also their hearing is extremely sensitive, compensating for any visual difficulties caused by darkness.

 The benefits of play

Play can help keep our pets’ bodies and minds healthy. Chasing balls, tossing toys in the air, finding toys and interacting with us all encourage our pets to exercise.

Catit Design Senses Play Circuit.Cats
The Catit Design Senses Play Circuit incorporates sight, sound and touch and is specially designed to entice, engage and entertain a cat while appealing to his natural hunting instincts.

Pets do suffer from unprecedented levels of obesity!  Play is an excellent way of encouraging your pet to keep active, and in good physical shape.

Bonding grows from interaction, as well as the cat’s bond with us.   Play with him.  Scratch him, caress him, massage his body.

Play can help prevent behavior problems. Giving your cat the opportunity to “hunt” at home can prevent the need to hunt wildlife.  Chasing wiggly toys, a ball, feather, batting some object.

What are good toys for pets?

cats A good toy is one that your cat enjoys playing with, it does not need to be expensive.  However, it does need to be safe.  Cats love crawling into cardboard boxes.  They can be entertained by an old pair of boots. Or they will throw around an old sock tied in a knot. A cats meow toy that has movement resembling mouse wiggles will entertain your cat for long periods of excitement.   Even a low hanging ornament at the bottom of the Christmas tree. Living, Cats So when you have a grumpy cat he may just be bored so provide him with activity involvement.  Cats love to climb trees.  Provide a climbing pole or a back yard tree.  Keep him engaged with toys he enjoys.

Bergan Turbo Scratcher Cat Toy.  The Turbo Scratcher cat toy offers hours of fun and exercise for your cat while reducing potential furniture damage due to scratching. Catnip and ball included.

Brain Freeze

Brain freeze is now spilling across species lines.  Starting with cats. The Internet can’t get enough cat videos. And right now it can’t get enough of cats with brain freeze.  A pet owner shares some ice cream with the cat.  It takes cute little cat licks. The result is the cats freezing in horror.  Or even making an odd sound in what appears to be pain.

Humans are not alone in experiencing this phenomenon. Our feline companions can also get the dreaded “ice cream headache,” as evidenced by overeager cats.  It’s hilarious, and a little bit painful to watch, but don’t feel too bad for the furry little gluttons.  The brief moment of discomfort didn’t quell these cats’ love of ice cold consumables one bit.

Again, treat your cat with affection and you both will enjoy one another.  Using another’s pain for my enjoyment is inhumane!

Original Grumpy Cat Photo

Grumpy Cat became an internet sensation after her photo was posted on Reddit on September 22, 2012. It was suggested that the original photo was photo shopped, so we posted a few videos on YouTube. The videos went viral and her popularity has continued to increase!

We aren’t exactly sure about Grumpy Cats breed; but she looks nothing like her mother or father. She looks similar to a Ragdoll or Showshoe; but there have never been any of that breed around the house. Her mom is a calico domestic short hair cat and her father has grey and white stripes. (Though I suppose there could be a different father, promiscuous cats you know…)

Tardar Sauce visits the vet regularly and she has a clean bill of health. Her petite size and famous face is likely due to feline dwarfism and her rear end wobbles a bit when she walks due to this; otherwise she is a perfect little kitty!
